The Third & The Seventh is a 13 minute long cg animated film by Alex Roman that tries to illustrate architectural art through a photographic point of view where main subjects are already-built spaces. The film brings together the disciplines of architecture and cinema in an abstract and surreal way. Alex (Jorge Seva) trained in CG and architectural visualization in Spain but discovered the beauty associated with already-built spaces. He took a year off to work on this project, bringing together a range of images, some abstract, some surreal. The third and seventh disciplines of architecture and cinema are references to Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel’s Lectures on the Aesthetics and the writings of film-theorist Ricciotto Canudo on architecture, sculpture, painting, dance, music, poetry, and cinema.

Director Alex Roman (Jorge Seva) was responsible for modelling, texturing, illumination, rendering, postproduction and editing, producing the work on 3dsmax, Vray, AfterEffects and Premiere, rendering it all on an i7 920 and a QX6850. There are a few non-CG elements in the shortfilm, photographer (shot on greenscreen), pigeons, timelapsed growing flowers, flying airplane and sky backgrounds. Alex was also responsible for sound design, music sequencing, orchestration and mixing, using Sonar and EWQLSO Gold Pro XP. Music was based on original scores by Michael Laurence Edward Nyman (The Departure) and Charles-Camille Saint-Saëns (Le Carnaval des animaux). CG work was done with 3dsmax, Vray, AfterEffects and Premiere. Music for the Compositing video is Humming Chorus by Giacomo Puccini.

Film-Maker’s Biography

Born in Madrid, Spain in 1972 – Alex Roman has been involved in art in one shape or form his entire life. A graduate from the University of Austin in Texas with a BA in Studio Art, Alex has always experimented with new styles or techniques and is constantly evolving his style and creations. Early on in his life, he was influenced greatly by his parents which were both artists as well as always being surrounded by creativity since both his other brothers were artists as well.

Other influences in his work are artists such as Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, Rene Magrite, MC Escher and countless other artists from all different eras. Upon graduating from College, Alex taught himself web development and began a career which involved taking all his knowledge about design and lighting and applying it to this new venue. What eventually evolved was a way for Alex to display his work for the world to see and enjoy at all times. Styles constantly change and new ideas always emerge and the end results are new ways of expression and an ever changing look and feel to his work.
